]]> Scottish-inspired Balmoral Restaurant is honoring seniors once again with its fifth annual Seniors Day, meaning anyone 65 and older can dine on a free, three-course meal starting at 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 9-10. Yes, free. And the senior can invite up to three guests to join them for the meal. For the special dinner, chef Joe Schroeder will be serving a choice of chicken liver mousse with crisp toast, shrimp with watermelon and goat cheese, cock-a-leekie soup or a mixed salad to start. Entree options include a choice of Campsie Glen Chicken with Stilton blue cheese, chili and honey grilled salmon, stuffed red pepper or Queen Elizabeth’s pork chop; all come with a choice of potatoes and vegetables. End with a sweet treat of Ye Auld Sticky Toffee Pudding, Blairgowrie Raspberry Cream Cranachan, Banoffee Pie Meringue or Perthshire’s Strawberry Meringue. Reservations will only be taken over the phone.

]]> Dekalb CASA hosts their signature fundraising event, 50 Men Who Cook to raise money to support CASA’s work of advocating for abused children who have experienced abuse or neglect in DeKalb County. This event is held annually in August at NIU’s Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center.

The evening featured 50+ men from the community who brought their favorite dish for guests to taste—guests then voted for their favorite in each category! Everyone at Balmoral is proud of Chef Joe Schroeder for winning People’s Choice Award and second place for Professional Chef with the dish Fat Bastard Belly of Pork.

Guests enjoyed the opportunity to savor delicious dishes, and have fun with entertainment and raffle prizes, all for a good cause.

Growing up in an orphanage, Balmoral Restaurant owner Colin Smith saw his share of generosity.

“A lot of older people, not so much the younger people, dropped off food and they gave money and clothes,” Smith said. “It’s about giving back.”

We truly are left speechless after such a kind thank you from Jill Matthews!
Jill wrote “A blessing happened in St. Charles today! A free restaurant quality 3-course meal was donated to ALL the residents at Carroll Towers by the river. All the residents were able to pick either chicken or salmon and had all the trimmings including soup and salad. All at no charge. If this sounds too good to be true, its because the man responsible Colin Smith IS too good to be true. He along with his staff at the Balmoral Restaurant in Campton Hills delivered the meals and the residents were thrilled! It was delicious! I heard comments like “this is the best chicken I’ve ever had” and the vegetables were so fresh” everything was top notch, just like you’d get it in the restaurant in person.
I wanted to publicly thank Colin and the team at the Balmoral and let everyone know about this awesome gesture of kindness.
I heard such good things, I ordered carryout from the Balmoral myself for my family. Guess what? It is the best chicken I’ve ever had!!! Can’t wait to try more dishes.
Thank you Colin and the Balmoral Staff! You made an amazing thing happen today and you will not be forgotten! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
